World Wildlife Day gives people around the world an opportunity to celebrate the many beautiful and varied forms of wild fauna and flora found on our planet, and the importance of conserving every species, for our environment and ourselves. World Wildlife Day also serves as an urgent reminder that we all need to step up and continue to fight against wildlife crime around the globe.

This year's theme, determined by the United Nations, is “The future of wildlife is in our hands." It's a theme and responsibility TreadRight and The Travel Corporation (TTC) have long taken to heart. Our most recent effort, unveiled in October 2015, saw TTC's family of brands introduce the TreadRight Animal Welfare Policydesigned to assist TTC's operations teams as they vet and assess all animal related activities they offer.

TreadRight based the policy on the Five Freedoms, a compact of rights for animals under human control, which asserts that animals under human control should have freedom from hunger and thirst; freedom from discomfort; freedom from pain, injury, and disease; freedom to express normal behaviour; and freedom from fear & distress.

We introduced this policy because TTC recognizes the importance of continually adopting new best practices and policies in the interest of helping to advance the positive transformation of our industry with the knowledge that the future of wildlife is in our hands. As we learn, as we evolve, and as we move forward we will continue to refine our processes and approach to sustainability.

You too can take the future of wildlife in your hands as you join the conversation by following our Wildlife Initiative partners WildAid and the Wilderness Foundation - Africa on their Facebook and Twitter feeds in the lead up to March 3, and throughout World Wildlife Day, to learn more about the important work they and their many partners are carrying out to help save animals.
