January 9th, 2014 - Logically, through the first few months of the Heritage Initiative, people have had plenty of questions about the grants, our partners, and our goals. So with the announcement of the grant recipients on the horizon, we thought it would be a great time to answer some of the big questions about the initiative and what is means to support artisans.

What is the Aspen Institute?

The Aspen Institute is an educational and policy studies organization based in Washington, DC. Its mission is to foster leadership based on enduring values and to provide a nonpartisan venue for dealing with critical issues.

What is the Alliance for Artisan Enterprise?

The Alliance for Artisan Enterprise, our newest partner in sustainability, was launched by former Secretary Hillary Clinton in 2012. The Alliance is a collaborative effort of more than 55 members, including small and medium enterprises, corporations, non-profit organizations and individuals who are working together to promote the full potential of artisan enterprises around the world.

What is the Alliance for Artisan Enterprise’s mission?

The mission of the Alliance is to support the power and potential of the artisan sector, to create jobs, increase incomes, enhance cultural heritage and promote development that respects the uniqueness of people and place.

Why has TreadRight chosen to support artisans?

At its core, supporting artisans is about empowerment. Better integrating artisans into global commerce increases standard of living for hundreds of thousands of people around the world, and developing economies account for 60% of the world market for handicrafts.

However, integrating artisans into the global marketplace is historically challenging, as many fail to see artisan enterprise as a means to driving economic growth.

How does supporting artisans help drive economic growth?

Behind agriculture, artisan activity is the second largest employer in the developing world. The artisan sector generates income, creates jobs, fosters community development, sustains ancient techniques, and safeguards culture and meaning, which are an essential component of healthy and sustainable development.

Why is it called The TreadRight Heritage Initiative?

Sustainability and responsibility, two core TreadRight values, mean more than simply supporting the environment. Heritage is crucial to the experiences The Travel Corporation family of brands extensive portfolio provides across the globe, and to bolstering culture, the very definition of people and place.

TreadRight’s mandate is to help protect the people and places we visit and we believe strengthening the artisan sector is an excellent way to sustain and encourage world heritage.

How can I help support artisan activity?

The Travel Corporation family of brands directly funds TreadRight, so in travelling with any of our 30 award-winning brands, you are also helping to support TreadRight and all of our projects and partners.

If you’d like to give directly to the Alliance for Artisan Enterprise yourself, you can do so right here

When will the TreadRight grant recipients be announced?

Soon! The application period has officially closed and we are delighted with the group of applicants that came through, with our partners noting that "The Alliance is excited for the incredible opportunity this presents for both artisans and travelers."
