El Congo-Ciudad Antigua
Purpose
This former TreadRight project is a crucial archaeological site located on the western face of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountain range
Objective
The archaeological remains at the site, which include a number of terrace structures, extend over more than 60 hectares, spreading down the slopes of narrow hillcrests from 900 to 600 meters elevation. Many of the remains are located within ProSierra’s El Congo research station and adjacent farms. The El Congo research station is an archaeological and biological conservation area owned by ProSierra since 1991.
Impact
As part of the Pro-Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta Foundation’s ongoing community development and conservation projects, TreadRight will help support the foundation in developing a related travel experience at El Congo-Ciudad Antigua. The experience will combine exploration of the rugged mountain landscape with wildlife and bird watching, as well as the possibility of spending a night at an ancient Tairona town, an opportunity otherwise impossible throughout the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta because tourists are not permitted stay overnight at Teyuna-Ciudad Perdida Park. In addition, Trafalgar guests can visit the research station for themselves.
UN GLOBAL GOALS
Through this project, we’re providing local employment opportunities such as tour guides for El Congo-Ciudad Antigua. These jobs contribute to the total number of people employed by the tourism industry, an indicator under the Decent Work and Economic Growth goal to promote sustainable tourism.
With TreadRight funding for conservation initiatives, we’re ensuring the conservation of mountain ecosystems, including their biodiversity, in order to enhance their capacity to provide benefits that are essential for sustainable development.
