Purpose
Surfrider believes the most effective way to prevent marine plastic is to change consumer behavior through action.
Objective
Plastic litter inflicts immeasurable harm upon ocean wildlife. Entanglement and ingestion have deadly consequences, killing wildlife protected by Australian and international law. Most plastic pollution at sea starts out on beaches, streets and sidewalks. Rainwater then flushes the litter through storm drain systems or directly into creeks, streams and rivers that lead to the ocean. When plastics enter the marine environment they slowly break down into smaller pieces, which marine life mistake for food, often with fatal results.
Impact
The partnership between TreadRight and Surfrider Foundation Australia focused on fighting to preserve, protect and restore coastal environments so that future generations get to enjoy beaches in the same way we do now.
In 2012, Surfrider launched a “Rise Above Plastics” campaign in Australia as a call to all beach goers to think about how they can make a difference, and stop their ocean from turning into a “plastic soup.”
As part of the ocean organizations campaign, TreadRight sponsored a number of beach cleanups along the coast, including a cleanup event for 100 Contiki employees, near the Surfrider Australia headquarters in Sydney, Australia. Contiki also works with Surfrider to reduce the impacts of plastics in the ocean by raising awareness about the dangers of plastic pollution and by advocating for a reduction of single-use plastics and the recycling of all plastics.
