Objective
The National Geographic Society mission is about “Inspiring people to care about our planet.” The organization does this through scientific discovery, research expeditions to the far corners of the Earth and also through films, books and its publications, including National Geographic Traveler magazine. National Geographic is one of the world’s largest non-profit scientific, educational and travel organizations and the organization believes that tourism, when planned and managed well, can be a powerful force for helping to protect our planet and safeguarding cultural treasures for future generations.
With a global audience of 450 million people, through its highly respected magazines, website, television series, feature films, expeditions, books, and other media platforms, products and events, the National Geographic Society helps to support and encourage sustainable tourism efforts to an extensive international audience.
The Awards honour the leading travel and tourism companies, organizations and destinations that are driving the positive transformation of the global tourism industry based upon sustainable tourism best practices.
Impact
The TreadRight Foundation was a Founding Partner and a sponsor of the National Geographic Travel World Legacy Awards. Based on the three pillars of sustainable tourism, including environmentally friendly operations, protection of natural and cultural heritage, and support for the well-being of local communities, the five World Legacy Award categories were: Earth Changers; Sense of Place; Conserving the Natural World; Engaging Communities; and Destination Leadership.
