Objective

There are multiple threats to the African rhino’s survival, nearly all of which are caused by humans. Over the past few decades, the drastic decline in population numbers has been fueled by the illegal rhino horn trade.

The rhino poaching crisis has demonstrated that there is no single solution to addressing illegal wildlife trade, which is an increasing global phenomenon, estimated to be the third largest illegal industry worldwide after drugs and human trafficking, and often has its roots in organised, trans-boundary crime.

Impact

Poaching is considered to be a “low risk – high reward” activity. For a South African NGO such as EWT, it is more feasible to focus on activities that elevate the risk associated with poaching rather than to reduce the reward. These interventions tackle various points in the poaching chain, and form the core of the EWT Rhino Project.

Contributions from TreadRight aided EWT in its care for orphaned baby rhinos, poaching and smuggling deterrent efforts using trained sniffer dogs, and delivering of rhino conservation resource materials and support for landowners and reserve managers.

UN GLOBAL GOALS

By supporting Endangered Wildlife Trust, we joined global efforts to combat poaching and trafficking of rhinos in Africa.
