All Hands and Hearts

This former project worked with All Hands and Hearts, which is dedicated to rebuilding communities after natural disasters.

The lives of co-founders David Campbell and Petra Nemcova were changed forever by the 2004 Thailand Tsunami. David Campbell heard about the devastating tsunami and jumped on a plane to offer his extensive expertise gained as a former CEO of BBN Technologies, ultimately starting what is now All Hands Volunteers in 2005. Petra Nemcova herself was swept away by the tsunami and survived by clinging to a tree for eight hours. This experience led to the establishment of the Happy Hearts Fund in 2005. In the Fall of 2017, these two organizations announced the merger to form All Hands and Hearts – Smart Response. Together, they now focus on delivering a Smart Response to those reeling from disaster both domestically and internationally.

All Hands and Hearts – Smart Response efficiently and effectively addresses the immediate and long-term needs of communities impacted by natural disasters. By listening to local people, and deploying their unique model of engaging volunteers to enable direct impact, they rebuild safe, resilient schools, homes and other community infrastructure. Through volunteer and community engagement they aim to help families recover faster after natural disasters using their “smart response” strategy – by rebuilding in a disaster resilient way we prepare them for future events and, through the process, strengthen both volunteers and communities.

In partnership with All Hands and Hearts and the Philam foundation, The Travel Corporation (TTC) contributed US$40,000 towards the re-building of the Alangalang school. The re-building project was successfully completed by October of 2015, and coincided with the second anniversary of Typhoon Haiyan.

In the case of the Kalika Secondary School in Nepal, TreadRight and Adventure World have donated US$30,000 to assist in the construction of a new school.

Funding from TreadRight was used to rebuild schools for children in Nepal that will lead to inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable communities. The funding also contributed to All Hands and Hearts – Smart Response programming to help strengthen the community’s resilience to natural disasters, such as Typhoon Haiyan.
