Shark Savers
This former TreadRight project supported Shark Savers, a non-profit conservation organization founded in 2007 by scuba divers dedicated to saving shark and manta populations through awareness, education and action.
Objective
Increasing protections for sharks requires information about local populations. However, even the most basic necessary data is often absent or missing.
Divers see sharks the most frequently and regularly and are often familiar with local trends, but rarely have the training or tools to accurately and consistently record these valuable sightings in a way that can be useful to shark conservation and advocacy.
SharksCount seeks to close an important data gap by enabling divers to act as “citizen scientists for sharks.” Over time, these sightings provide essential information about local shark population trends with the potential of improving protections for sharks.
Impact
TreadRight supported the SharksCount program, teaching divers and travellers about sharks and shark conservation. TreadRight also created a customised 11-day Galapagos and Ecuador trip with Contiki led by TreadRight Ambassador Céline Cousteau, to educate travellers about the fragile ecosystems of the region and inspire them to help protect and preserve the diverse cultures and marine life of the islands.
Travellers were introduced to the wonders of diving and snorkelling with sharks, while learning to respect and help protect sharks, globally. TreadRight and Contiki donated 100% of the profits from the trip to the SharksCount program.

This project sponsored many educational initiatives conducted by SharksCount to raise awareness of the threats to sharks. Through our partnership, we are taking swift and urgent action to protect marine ecosystems and sharks.
