This former TreadRight project focused on people, who are at the heart of the Bushmans Kloof success story. The staff and the local communities give Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Wellness Retreat its authenticity, history and future social, economic and cultural sustainability.
The remote nature of the area creates immense challenges for local communities; for education, jobs, career development, family unity, and next generation stability. As a result, the Bushmans Kloof staff, their families, and the local community, is a priority of the property’s business philosophy and operation.
Beyond its boundaries, Bushmans Kloof, through a number of initiatives and projects, has for many years, been a supporter and sponsor of Elizabethfontein Primary, the local farm school, attended by staff member’s children. One of the highlights of the school year is the annual Leadership Camp, where Grade 7 learners from Elizabethfontein and two other local schools, Wupperthal and Grootkloof Primary, broaden their horizons.
Bushmans Kloof and TreadRight have teamed up with Bishops, a private high school in Cape Town, South Africa, to facilitate the camp. With the focus on developing leadership and life-skills, as well as offering the students a ‘City experience’ (many of whom, have never ventured further than the small rural town of Clanwilliam), the Cederberg Stars Leadership Camp, proved to be an experience for the students, as unforgettable as it was life-changing.
Thanks to the support of numerous individuals and organizations, each providing a contribution (time, cash and kind), the students were exposed to a range of motivating people and presentations, had a fair share of fun with visits to the aquarium, the movies and up Table Mountain, and took on a physical challenge or two, made a little easier by the pair of takkies donated by Hi-Tec.
This project equipped youth with leadership and life skills to excel in future endeavours. The Cederberg Stars Leadership Camp enabled these youth to have a ‘City experience’, reducing inequalities from their small, rural town.
